Basement Floor Drain Backing Up: What It's Telling You
The floor drain is the lowest point in your system, so when the main line clogs, that's where it shows up first.

When water or sewage comes up through the drain in your basement floor, it is almost always telling you the same thing: something is blocking your main sewer line. The floor drain is the lowest opening in your plumbing, so when the main line backs up, that is the first place it overflows. Here is what is going on.
Why the floor drain is the canary
Every drain in your house feeds into one main line that runs out to the sewer, and the basement floor drain sits at the bottom of that system. When the main line clogs, the water has nowhere to go and rises up through the lowest opening, which is the floor drain. So a backing-up floor drain is a main-line problem, not a floor-drain problem. It is the same root issue behind a toilet that backs up across the house.
Common causes
- Roots in the main line
- Years of grease and buildup
- "Flushable" wipes and other debris that does not break down
- A bellied or broken section of pipe
- Heavy rain overwhelming an older line or a failing sump setup
What to do right now
Stop using water everywhere in the house. Keep people and pets away from the backed-up water and treat it as a health hazard, because it is sewage. Do not pour chemicals down the drain. Then call for service, and here is what to do the moment a main line backs up.
How we clear it
We run a camera down the line to find exactly where the blockage is, then clear it with hydro jetting or root removal, or repair the pipe if it is damaged. For an active backup, our 24/7 emergency service is a phone call away.
