Drain Care
Cleaning vs. Repair: Signs Your Sewer Line Needs More Than a Snake
Most drain problems clear with a cleaning. Some come back no matter how often you snake them, because the pipe is the problem. Here's how to tell.

Most drain problems clear with a good cleaning. But some come back no matter how many times you snake them, because the pipe itself is the problem. Here is how to tell whether you need a cleaning or a repair, so you are not paying to clear the same line twice.
When a cleaning is all you need
If the line is structurally sound and just clogged, cleaning fixes it, and that covers most calls:
- A one-time clog from grease, roots, or debris
- Slow drains that clear and stay clear after a snaking or hydro jetting
- No cracks or collapses on the camera
A camera inspection confirms the pipe is intact, and a snaking or jetting gets you flowing again.
Signs the pipe itself needs repair
Cleaning is only a temporary fix when the pipe is damaged. Watch for:
- The same spot clogs again within weeks or months of being cleared
- The camera shows a crack, a collapsed section, an offset joint, or a sag (belly) where waste pools
- Sewage smells in the yard, or a soggy, sunken patch of lawn over the line
- Roots that keep coming back, they are getting in through a break
- Very old clay or cast-iron pipe near the end of its life
When you see these, more cleanings just buy time. The line needs a repair.
How we tell the difference (no guessing)
We camera every sewer line before recommending anything, so you see what we see. If it is a clog, we clean it. If the pipe is failing, we show you the damage on the screen and walk you through the sewer line repair, excavating and replacing only the section that needs it. Either way you get an honest recommendation and an upfront price, not a pitch for the most expensive option.
