Why Is My Toilet Backing Up? (And When It's the Sewer Line)
A backing-up toilet is sometimes a plunger fix and sometimes a warning from your sewer line. Here's how to tell which.

A toilet that backs up is sometimes a simple clog you can clear yourself, and sometimes the first sign of a problem in your main sewer line. The trick is telling which. Here is how to read it.
First, is it just the one toilet?
If only one toilet is affected and your sinks, tubs, and other toilets drain fine, the clog is almost certainly in that toilet or the short line right behind it. A flange plunger or a toilet auger usually clears it.
The warning sign: it's more than the toilet
If flushing the toilet makes a nearby tub gurgle or rise with water, or if more than one fixture backs up, the problem is deeper, in the main line that every fixture in your home shares. Waste backs up into the lowest opening first, usually a first-floor toilet or a basement drain. That is not a plunger job, and here is what to do the moment a main line backs up.
What causes a main-line backup
- Tree roots growing into the pipe
- Years of grease and buildup narrowing the line
- "Flushable" wipes, which do not break down
- A cracked, bellied, or collapsed section of pipe
- A blockage out at the city connection
What to try first
Stop running water anywhere in the house, because every drain you use adds to the backup, and stop flushing. For a clog isolated to one toilet, a flange plunger or auger. For anything beyond one fixture, stop and call before it overflows.
How we find and fix it
We run a camera inspection to see the actual cause, then clear it with snaking, hydro jetting, or root removal, or repair the pipe if it is broken. If it is actively backing up, our 24/7 emergency service can get someone out fast.
