Fall is the smartest time to deal with a sewer line. A small problem you catch now is a lot easier and cheaper to handle than the same problem during a January backup, when the ground is frozen and everyone is calling at once. Here is why the timing matters and how to get your line ready.

Why winter is hard on sewer lines

• Frozen ground. Once the ground freezes, any repair that needs digging gets harder and more expensive. Catching a break in the fall means fixing it on easy terms.
• Holiday load. Thanksgiving and the holidays push more grease, food, and guests through your drains than any other time of year. A line that is already marginal backs up under the extra load.
• Roots keep growing. Tree roots do not stop for winter. A line that is starting to fill with roots now will only be worse by spring.

A simple fall checklist

• Watch for the early warning signs: slow drains, gurgling, or a faint sewage smell.
• Run water through the drains you rarely use so the traps stay full.
